adhd task paralysis · why can't i start a task · adhd can't start deadline tomorrow
Three deadlines and you can't start. What actually helps.
Why it happens
Task paralysis isn't a motivation problem, and it isn't laziness. The brake goes on at the moment of starting, which is why you can care enormously about something and still not begin it.
This is also why prioritisation advice tends to fail here. Building a system is another task, and you're stuck because there are already too many. Ranking three deadlines does not make any of them easier to open.
What breaks it is shrinking the first action until starting no longer requires a decision. Not "work on the report" — "open the report."
The fix
If you want an assistant to help without making it worse, paste this.
I'm stuck and can't start. For this conversation: Give me ONE action. Not a list, not a framework, not a schedule. One concrete thing small enough that doing it isn't a decision. Do not ask me clarifying questions while I'm stuck. Guess if you have to. Do not tell me to break it into steps — do the breaking for me and give me only the first one. When I finish that one, I'll come back and you can give me the next.
The honest limit
None of this is medical advice, and a prompt is not treatment. If this is happening most days and costing you work or relationships, that's worth raising with a professional.
What a tool can do is stop adding friction at the exact moment you have none to spare.
An assistant that recognises you're stuck before it answers gives you one action instead of ten strategies.
