chatgpt keeps asking clarifying questions · why does ai ask so many questions · ai won't just answer
Your AI asks three questions before it answers anything. Here's the fix.
Why it happens
A clarifying question is cheap for the model and expensive for you. It costs the model nothing to ask; it costs you a decision, a typed reply, and a wait.
When you're already stuck, three questions is often where the conversation ends. You came for momentum and got a form to fill in.
The fix
Paste this at the start of a chat.
Rule for this conversation: attempt first, clarify after. If you can make a reasonable attempt at what I asked, do it — even if you have to guess. State your assumption in one line, then give me the answer. I will correct you, and correcting a draft is far easier for me than answering questions. If you genuinely cannot attempt anything useful, ask ONE question. Never two or three. Then wait. If I sound stuck, overwhelmed, or short on time, ask nothing at all. Just make your best attempt.
The part a prompt can't do
The last rule is the one that matters most and the one a pasted prompt handles worst: knowing when you're in no state to be questioned.
That requires the assistant to read how you're writing, not just what you asked — and to change its behaviour before it answers.
That detection is the difference between a formatting instruction and a skill.
